Creating a two color granny square will create so many design possibilities. It is like working with block quilting, except you crochet your blocks. The blocks are a quick hook and before you know it, you will have a project completed.
The yarn I used for this project was purchased from Knit Picks, and it feels like soft cotton sliding through your fingers. Once you do a couple of these blocks, you will be able to work it without a pattern. Make sure when you decide to do a project with these block that you google some quilt block online for inspiration. And most of all have fun and enjoy.
Supplies:
Yarn~sport weight (I used Knit Picks Brava Sport) 2 colors
Crochet hook~size F 3.75mm
Scissors
Pictorial Pattern:
MC – main color
CC – contrast color
ch – chain
dc – double crochet
sl st – slip stitch
sp – space
Rnd – round
With MC ch 4, or magic loop, if using ch4 sl st in first chain to form ring

Rnd2: 2dc, ch3, 2dc in ch3 sp, dc in each of the next 3 dc, 2 dc in the next ch3 sp, ch2 , change to CC (this equals the third chain on hook), 2dc in ch 3sp, dc in each of the next 3dc, 2dc, ch3, 2dc in the next ch3 sp, dc in each of the next 3dc, 2dc in the next ch3 sp, ch2, change to MC (this equals the third chain on hook), 2 dc in ch3 sp, dc in each of the next 2dc, join with a sl st in first dc. ch3 (count as first dc of next rd)
Rnd3: dc in each of the next 2dc, 2dc ch3 2dc in next ch3 sp, dc in each of the next 7dc, 2dc in next ch3 sp, ch2, change to CC (this equals the third chain on hook), 2dc in ch3 sp, dc in each of the next 7dc, 2dc ch3 2dc in the next ch3 sp, dc in each of the next 7dc, 2dc in next ch3 sp, ch2, change to MC (this equals the third chain on hook), 2 dc in ch3 sp, dc in each of the next 4 dc, join with a sl st to the first dc, ch3 (count as first dc of next rd)

I weave in as I crochet and cut the excess yarn away, on each corner I tie the ends…
and weave in the ends with an embroidery needle.
Make sure before sewing the pieces together block your squares and as you can see I made solid color blocks too, you will need some depending on the design you will be making.
I played around with a few designs before I sew the blocks together. You can be as creative as you want, as I said before, check out some quilting block designs for ideas.

Hi Cynthia,
This is absolutely amazing! I’m awestruck! Do you cut off the yarn every round for color changes, or keep it hanging out until the next round?
Cynthia says
Hi, sometimes I cut and sometimes I keep it hanging, because the block is so small. Have fun hookin’

Hello! The blanket you worked on was beautiful! I have a question to ask you about each squares. How many squares are to crochet for a blanket? I am working on that but different design and of course, two different colors on one square, too. 🙂

Are you cutting the yarn during color changes, or are you working over the color not in use?
