Within a year I’ve been attacked 3 times with a rash by this beautiful vine. The vine that I was pulling out of my garden I thought it was the same beautiful vine that I let grow in my backyard; not realizing that this vine was not the same…but it looked identical to the other vine.
The first time I weeded I got a rash on my face from wiping my eyes. The second time I weeded I had it on both arms and at this point I still didn’t know what was causing the rash. The third time I got it on my arms and chest…Okay Houston we have a problem! Why is it every time I go and weed the beds I get a rash, after doing the same thing for 12 years and it had never happen to me before.
So I figured it may be poison ivy. Maybe the two vines are not the same. After research I found out that the two vines were not the same and that I was pulling poison ivy, and the vine in my backyard that looked identical to the one in the front was virginia creeper…
So gardeners, beware and don’t be fooled by not knowing what poison ivy looks like because the virginia creeper and poison ivy looks the same. You notice that the poison ivy has 3 leaves and the virginia creeper has 5. The old saying goes “Leaves of 3 let them be.”

Yep, when we first moved to the country 25+ years ago, I almost bought expensive poison ivy killer to wipe out the climber shown in your last photo. Now I know the difference & just pull down the Virginia Creepers before they get up onto the wood siding! We do get both in East Texas, so it’s essential to tell them apart.
