Transfer clay pots to amazing home decor. A few weeks ago I was shopping in Hobby Lobby which is one of my favorite craft stores. I came across these wonderful clay pots that were on sale for $1.00! I grabbed about ten of them, not knowing exactly what I would do with them at the time. So, the first thing I decided to do with a few of the pots is paint them and transfer a print on it. I’m so happy with the outcome. This project is easy!
Items needed:
clay pot
paint of choice (2 colors)
paint brush
low grit sand paper
dryer
Print to transfer

paint undercoat
I used white for first color and grey for the second, you can use whatever color you choose.
print out the image you want to use, make sure you print it in reverse and cut it as close to image as possible
cover print with mod podge
position and place print and let dry for 24 hours or use a dryer
after print has dried, wet it and gentley rub until you see the print beneath
after rubbing paper off, take a low grit sand paper and gently sand the entire pot for an aged look
I decorated 3 clay pots and used one for kitchen utensils…doesn’t it look great!
here are all the clay pots…I love them! The other two I will use for planters.

I love the pots and have 2 questions regarding your process. Are the prints inkjet or laser? Which mod podge did you use? Thanks
Cynthia says
Thank you Susan! I used an inkjet printer and I used Mod Podge matte, water based.

I love them. But once you wet the image to rub it off how do you not take off all the paint?? What type of paint did you use? Is it waterproof? Thanks!
Cynthia says
I used acrylic paint. Once the paper is dry…you wet the paper and rub very gently. Thank you for stopping by!

LOVE the pots & tried it right away! I had difficulty in the transfer process – not all of the design was there after I carefully removed the paper with water & rubbing gently…what tips can you give please?
Cynthia says
I’m glad that you tried this craft. I’m sorry that your transfer didn’t process. Did you print it with a laser printer?
Cynthia says
I used an inkjet and followed the instructions to a T.
Cynthia says
I know a laser printer will make your transfer perfect. At the time that I did mine, I didn’t have a laser printer and used an inkjet. Another question: Did you let it dry for 24 hours or did you use a hair dryer? I used a hair dryer when I did them.
Sue says
how long did it take to dry with a dryer?
Cynthia says
It didn’t take long at all, maybe 5 to 10 minutes.

Hi Cynthia, thank you very much for sharing. I have a pot ready to finish which I will do tomorrow. Can I put soil in it and use it as an outside flower pot? Your pots look amazing!
