Weaving has become popular again. I’ve seen some fabulous projects on Instagram, and I wanted to give it a try. So, since I have plenty of yarn on hand, all I needed was a loom. I searched online for one, and I found them to be a little pricey. So I asked my husband to help me create one. You can create your own loom with these instructions.
Supplies:
wood 1 1/2 x 3/4
Two small dowels (cut 1 1/2 inches) or small nails
screws
wood buttons
Create Your Own Loom: Instruction for Wooden Loom
Cut wood two pieces 18″, two pieces 14″, cut dowels 1 1/2 inches each
Drill 25 holes evenly on each 15″ piece wood. Drill small holes (smaller than the screw) at each end of 18″ and 15″ wood. Countersink holes at each end of 15″ wood. Put 15″ piece on top of 18″ piece and drill in screws. Insert each piece of dowels in the pre-drill holes with glue. Screw screws in pre-set holes, cap each countersunk hole with the wood buttons.
Create Your Own Loom: Prepping loom for weaving.
Start by tying the yarn on the dowel on either end. Loop it at the top on the other end of the loom and back down and loop on the dowel next to the starting dowel, keep doing this until the yarn is looped around every dowel. Make sure the strings are taut. Tye off on the last dowel, cut yarn.
Weave about a two each piece of cardboard or stock paper at the end of the loom. The loom is ready for weaving!
Create Your Own Loom: Basic Weaving Tips
Cut about 36 inches of yarn. Starting at the bottom of the loom, take one end of the yarn and weave about 4 inches through the loom. Weave a dowel through the loom ( this make it easier to weave) Now, take the other end and thread the needle and began making that tapestry!
