DIY Camera Strap

Leather Camera Strap

In the month of May, I entered a contest at FynesDesigns web site and I won a $50.00 gift card from the Leather Hide Store…yeah!!! As soon as I won, I purchased my leather…I was so happy, and as soon as I received my leather, I had no problem of what to make. On FynesDesigns’ site she has a leather camera strap pattern with instructions.

My strap isn’t exactly like the one that she made I based mine from my Nikon strap and FynesDesigns’ instructions. I had so much fun creating it (my first time sewing with leather).

I purchased a leather needle because the needle I was using wasn’t suited for this project, also I changed my straight stitch foot on my machine to a roller foot. The leather needle made my life so much easier.

I’m so excited about my camera strap. I can’t wait to create more projects with my leather. Thank you FynesDesigns for hosting the contest; and thank you Leather Hide Store for sponsoring!

Thanks Jordan for modeling my project!

distress leather
I purchased western distress leather…so light weight and soft…love it!
cutting leather
I used the measurements from my Nikon strap.
cut leather pieces
I cut 2 long pieces of leather and I cut 4 small pieces of leather to connect the 2 cut pieces of webbing strips and leather strips together.
sewing leather
Make sure you use a leather needle and roller foot or walking foot. Sew the wrong sides together. Sew one side, glue in-between, sew other side (make sure glue isn’t near where you will be sewing.
leather pocket
I made a pattern for my pocket free hand. I used the camera cap for measurements and I cut one piece and folded to the size of the cap.

Thanks Dorian for modeling my project!

I used a Versa Tool to brand my name on the leather

Great job, not sure I’d have nerve to try something like that. The leather you got was gorgeous, good choice to work with.
You must have a good sewing machine, I’d be afraid to attempt that with mine that is always acting up (about a 10-12 yrs. old EuroPro). I’d really love to get a new machine or at least a different one. How did you know to use a rolling or walking foot? You did a beautiful job making that strap. Congrats on making a success of a new project.
    Happy summer days

Jane, thanks for stopping by! This was my first time ever sewing with leather, I was sewing the leather with a regular needle and it was bending…so I did a search on google how to sew with leather and found out that I needed a leather sewing needle, walking foot or roller foot and I purchased leather needle…smooth sailing…I have a regular Singer machine…the leather is thin and very soft…so it worked out well.
