Cucamelons (Mexican Watermelons)

By Cynthia 3 Comments

I was so fascinated over these cute Cucamelons (Mexican Watermelons) when I saw them on Pinterest, that I had to plant some myself.  The vines were rapidly growing and I couldn’t wait to harvest my first bushel. It took about two months before I could get about two handful of cucumbers…yep I said a handful. I was a little disappointed that I didn’t get much considering that there were vines everywhere; but I was glad that I planted them, now I’ve experience growing and tasting them.

I read that some people don’t like the taste of them…but I like them.  They taste like cucumber with a little tartness. I’m going to have a little bit more patient before I tear down the vines to see if I can get another harvest before the growing season is over. So if you decide to plant cucamelons, realize that they need some space to grow.

Here is a salad that I found online that you may want to try, incase you grow them or buy them.

For heavens sake Cynthia, they are so cute and little. Never heard of them before. Would be quite interesting to grow them I’d think. Hope you do get another harvest of them before season ends . How did you find out about them? Where do you get seeds to grow them? Are they a summer crop? I’d like to try if I can find seeds to grow them. Our climate is very dry here, do they need humidity? Let me know more about them if you please? Happy weekend

Yea, Jane I hope I get another harvest too. I was expecting so much more. I guess if I plant them again I will have to do a little more research and figure out what is the best environment for them. Can’t remember actually where I ordered them from Amazon I think. On the package it states that the plant benefits from consistent moisture. I assume that humidity could play a part in a good crop. You may have success with them if you keep them moist, since you live in a dry climate
