Create your yarn using knit cotton fabric or t-shirt fabric. Don’t pay that high price for cotton yarn, make it yourself. Creating yarn from cotton fabric and t-shirt fabric is so rewarding. I will show you how to cut your yarn using store bought fabric and a used t-shirt.
Cutting the Fabric to Create your yarn using knit cotton fabric:
Fold the fabric in half and then fold it again and fold it until it’s at a good length for cutting, leaving about two inches at the top.
Notice that at the top is two layers
Cut one-inch strips, stopping about one-fourth inch after the folds.
I’ve turned the fabric so that you can see exactly what to do. I cut the fabric one-inch strips across.
Next take the cut folds and pull them back, take the first layer from the top and cut around two of the strips at a time as shown below.
Next pull back the top layer, and on the bottom layer cut one strip, next cut around two strips until you get to the end if the fabric.
Now you have one strip of fabric. Take the end and begin to pull (stretch) the yarn, after you stretch the yarn, roll it into a ball.
Cutting the T-shirt to create your yarn:
Cut the t-shirt right below the sleeves.
Also, cut the hem off.
Cut the t-shirt into one-inch strips, two inches from the top (which is actually the side of the t-shirt).
Pick the t-shirt up and slide across arm to make strips. Begin cutting along the first arrow to first slit.
The first cut
Continue cutting diagonally
When you finish cutting you will have one string.
As before pull (stretch) the fabric to make the yarn.
Roll the yarn into a ball, now it’s ready to use.
