Here is an excellent DIY leather fringe keychain or purse fob, that’s easy to make using recycle material. Whenever you are out and about and notice a leather couch or chair on the side of the road, stop and cut some of that leather (it’s a gold mine), because there are so many projects you can make with it and leather can be expensive.
You can also take a trip to a second-hand store especially when there is a winter sale.
NOTE: Wash the used leather in the washer before using it.
Supplies for the DIY Leather Fringe Keychain:
scrap leather
ornaments
hot glue gun
scissors
permanent fabric markers (optional)
Cut a 3 1/2″ x 7″ piece of the leather, mark it about a 1/2 inch at the top (this is the stop cutting line). Also cut a thin piece of leather 5″ long for the hook.
Using the permanent fabric markers, make a rainbow of colors (optional). Cut the leather in 1/4 slits across to make the fringe.
After cutting the leather, roll it up, as you rolling add small dots of glue to the leather, then secure it with a rubber band.
Now for putting everything together. I used a wooden ball for the decor of one key chain fringe, and I used an antique thimble for the other. To attach the thimble, you will need to drill a hole in the top of the thimble first to insert the leather loop.
After drilling the hole in the top of the thimble, fold the piece of leather for the loop in half and insert into the hole. Next, squeeze hot glue inside the thimble and push the fringe inside the thimble. For the wooden top keychain/fob insert glue in the hole and push the top of the leather in the hole and add glue at the top and add the twine.
I love my fringe keychain/fob! Here it is as a fob on my crossover purse. You will need an open clasp to attach it.
And here it is as a keychain. You will need a key ring to add it to your keys.
